They got to Matchday 24 without a loss in 2009/10, but were only third and finished the campaign in fourth and 11 points behind champions Bayern. They also have the deep scars of having twice thrown away the title on the final day of the season.
Bayer’s most recent 3-2 win at Freiburg moved them onto 70 points, which is the second-best tally ever at this stage of a Bundesliga season after the 74 points that Pep Guardiola’s Munich side had on the board in 2013/14. That Bayern team remain the only side to enjoy a longer unbeaten start to a Bundesliga season, not losing any of their first 28 games.
